Video Poker Strategy
Here is a basic strategy guide to play free video poker. This should help you decide what you should keep and which cards to throw away:
- All low cards, no straight or
flush draws - get rid of all five
cards.
You will have a better chance of winning by drawing for five cards because you need Jacks or better to win. By keeping any cards here, you are hoping to draw for two pairs or better which isn't likely.
- One card ranked Jack or
higher - keep that card and
discard the others.
This game is much like 5 card draw poker. There are only 52 cards in the deck, so getting rid of the low ones gives you a better chance of matching that high card.
- Suited 10-Jack, 10-Queen or
10-King - keep both of these
cards and discard the others.
The odds are slightly better to complete a good hand in this situation.
- Two unsuited cards that are
Jack or higher - keep the lowest
two cards that are Jack or
higher if you have more than 2
and discard the other three.
- Three cards to a straight
flush - keep these three and
draw for the other two.
This is important because you always want to give yourself a chance for a big payout over getting a pair and getting a 1 to 1 payout.
- Two suited cards that are
Jack or better - keep the two
suited high cards and discard
the others.
- Four cards to an inside or
outside straight draw - keep the
four cards and go for the
straight unless you also have a
pair of Jacks or higher.
- Low pair in your hand, no
card Jack or higher - keep the
pair and go for the three of a
kind.
Your odds of getting the three of a kind is about 1 out of 8 or 12.5%.
- Low pair in your hand, also
a Jack or higher - about as much
of a toss up as there is in
video poker. You have 1 out of 3
odds of getting the high pair
and 1 out of 8 of getting the
three of a kind.
- Four cards to a flush draw -
keep those four cards and go for
the flush.
- Jacks or better already in
your hand - must be kept unless
you have at least three cards to
a Royal Flush as well.
